Introducing Dr D

Hi! My name is Dr Vicki Dennison (Dr D).
I started out as a research scientist, having gained a PhD from The University of Sheffield in 2001.
I am a fully qualified science teacher (GTP secondary science Bishop Grosseteste University College, Lincoln) with experience of teaching at all levels from Primary to Higher Education.
I also publish on-line articles relating to science education, providing lesson plans and suggestions for fun activities to engage children of all ages with science, and have published a series of poems to raise the profile of literature within science teaching (and possibly vice versa!).
I have recently had the pleasure of working with the BBC as a science busker on the UK tour of their flagship science show ‘Bang Goes the Theory‘, demonstrating a variety of experiments and scientific wonders to members of the public.
I am committed to promoting the safeguarding and well-being of young people, and have CRB enhanced disclosure, and certification in awareness of safeguarding and child protection from both Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire County Councils. I am also covered by Public Liability Insurance.

About Dr D's

The primary objective of Dr D’s is to make Science fun, to engage 5 to 11 year-olds with science, and to enable young people to appreciate the wonders around them. Any good scientist has to develop the skills of careful observation, detailed recording, and the ability to ignore convention on occasion and use their imagination. These are all qualities which young children have in abundance, which is what makes working with them such a joy! Think about it… The most common question asked by most children is “Why?”… They have a thirst for knowledge! That is the essence of the scientist in all of us!

Dr D’s Science Days was officially registered as a business in February 2011, after having been a fantastical ambition for many years. The Ofsted report ‘Successful Science’ published in January 2011 highlighted the need for improved science education within the primary sector, and this was just the inspiration needed to take the plunge and go freelance as a specialist Science Education Consultant. There is potential out there which needs to be tapped!

The approach of Dr D’s is three-fold:

  1. Activity days in Primary Schools to engage and educate children.
  2. Consultancy and training for Primary School teachers to enhance their effectiveness in delivering the KS1 and KS2 Science curriculum.
  3. Children’s parties to enthuse and inspire young minds.
